Look at this satellite image to get a better idea of the weather in Portugal and in the Douro region during your stay. The Douro is found 150 km East of Porto, at the border with Spain. Its climate is generally dry, the greatest rainfall being in December and January and in some regions, also in March. The rest of the year you are bound to come across dry weather. The colder temperatures are also felt during the months of December and January with some evenings reaching below 0ºC. The warmest period is in July and August, with thermometers reaching around 40ºC in some areas. Each season has its advantages. The natural surroundings of the Douro make it unique during each season, with its vine leaves going brown and crunchy in Autumn; the valley become naked in Winter; Spring fills the valley with purple, red and yellow flowers in between the flowering vineyards, which disappear as the Summer fills the vines with plump grapes.
